Martu families are on a journey to create more jobs and more businesses.
Jamukurnu-Yapalikurnu Aboriginal Corporation (JYAC) is the trustee for Martu native title rights and interests, the Martu land council.
Martu, JYAC and other Martu organisations have worked together for the past 4 years to make a new economic plan.
This plan, the Palyaninpa Jimarti Baju Martukaja-ku (Building Wealth for Martu) Strategy, is a map of Martu economic opportunities now, and in the future.
The Martu economic plan has 3 key steps:
Martu education and employment
Martu business, family and community
JYAC support for JYAC + Martu businesses by establishing a charitable company.
Martuku Watkamutiku Pty Ltd [MWPL](Martu working together) was established by JYAC in 2022.
MWPL is a Martu company that will report to JYAC as the owner. JYAC will report to Martu through the Wanajarra and Yina (Elders) Council, at general meetings of JYAC and in the JYAC annual reports published at www.jyac.com.au
MWPL is owned by Martu and operates for the benefit of Martu. MWPL will not pay dividends. The operations and surplus funds will be managed for the benefit of Martu. MWPL will operate as a charity, with 3 Martu + 3 independent directors on the board.
MWPL will create economic opportunities, engage with Martu businesses for contracting and business opportunities, and employ Martu, by:
Leveraging native title to create commercial outcomes for Martu
Entering into commercial arrangements
Creating and sustaining commercial operations
Assisting Martu to explore their own business opportunities
Providing commercial returns and employment opportunities for Martu.
